Mark comes from a family steeped in the tradition of NH racing. His mother Jenny was one of the top trainers for many years, and my father was a leading jockey. After leaving school I worked as a stable lad for David Nicholson for three years. Mark then joined Martin Pipe as 2nd jockey for 18 months to gain more experience. When he had proved myself his mother offered him the first jockey position at Weathercock. He had ten very successful years together with plenty of big winners, including winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1991 on Garrison Savannah, and finishing 2nd in the Grand National the same year.

Mark retired from riding in 1993, and having known that he always wanted to train, became assistant to his mother for three years. In 1997 he leased Saxon House Stables, the historic Lambourn yard owned by the late Fulke Walwyn. He had two great years there and had a Cheltenham Festival winner with Monsignor. Things moved up several gears when he purchased Weathercock House from his mother when she retired in 1999. Malcolm Denmark who owns Monsignor helped financially with the purchase of Weathercock House and together we hope to produce a dream team.

We have some lovely horses here this season including several currently for sale and I have a young and enthusiastic team working with me. Many of the top jockeys ride for me including Tony McCoy and Timmy Murphy and they regularly come into the yard to do some schooling. Our horses often win "best turned out awards" at the races and my staff take a real pride in their job.
