SINCE Peter Chapple-Hyam chalked up two Group 1 successes in his rookie season as a trainer in 1991, he has gone on to win many of the biggest prices racing has to offer.

In that first year with a licence, he made a huge initial impression on the sport with Rodrigo Di Triano and Dr Devious blazing a trail for his Manton-based operation.

Chapple-Hyam, previously assistant to Barry Hills, had just 23 horses under his care. But Rodrigo Di Triano would provide him with a top-level success in the Middle Park Stakes and then just weeks later Dr Devious struck in the Dewhurst.

In an extraordinarily rapid rise to the top of racing’s tree, the following season would bring even greater success through Classic victories.

Rodrigo Di Triano landed the 2,000 Guineas before his fellow stable-mate Dr Devious secured racing’s most coveted prize – a glorious Derby win.

ST GATIEN is superbly located just a couple of minutes away from some of the best turf gallops in the world and also several excellent all-weather surfaces.

Virtually on the doorstep of the yard are the renowned Long Hill and Warren Hill gallops, while slightly further away up the Bury Road is the famous Limekilns training-grounds, as well as the fine Al Bahathri polytrack.

Including the training-grounds on the racecourse side of town, there are 50 miles of chalk-based turf gallops, which have been maintained year in and year out for over 300 years.

Such an extensive choice of gallops to work on ensures that every horse is catered for no matter what stage of its career it is at. The land is owned and looked after by the Jockey Club Estates.

St Gatien is a well-equipped yard with a trotting ring immediately on hand. There is also a horse walker on the premises and a lunge pit.

There are 36 boxes in the main yard at St Gatien, which has been used as a base for training horses since Bob Sherwood took his operation there in the late 19th century.
