The 14th April 2007 saw Gordon Elliott become the youngest ever trainer to win the world's most prestigious steeplechase, the Aintree Grand National. It was a phenomenal training feat, achieved by the 29 year old, for many reasons; not only had Gordon only just entered his second season as a licensed trainer but the horse, Silver Birch, was bought from none other than the Champion trainer Paul Nicholls.

Another incredible fact is that despite having won the Grand National, Gordon was yet to train a winner on the track back home in Ireland.   Undoubtedly a defining moment for Gordon's career, the Grand National win highlighted him as a serious, up and coming training force to be reckoned with.

And he has not disappointed since. The winners have been coming in thick and fast, whether it is at the local point to point or at Cheltenham. Gordon is young, determined and hungry for success. 

Capranny Stables are situated on a fifty-acre farm found at the end of a private, mile-long avenue. The happiness and welfare of each individual horse is of a priority and the quiet, secluded setting provides an ideal environment for this purpose.
 
The yard is located just forty minutes from Dublin and three hours from Belfast, which means we are centrally located for racing in Ireland and are able to transport horses to race in the UK with relative ease thanks to the proximity of the main ports which service England.
 
Within Capranny we have two American-style barns as well as twenty outside boxes back to back, totalling fifty stables in all. We also have the capacity to house four or five horses in an open barn which leads out onto a woodchip paddock, providing sheltered yet well-ventilated accommodation, particularly beneficial for those horses with respiratory problems. In addition we have a further six isolation stables in a separate barn to house new arrivals to the yard.
 
For day-to-day use we have a 4 and a quarter-furlong Wexford sand circular gallop and a 7-furlong grass gallop on an incline. During those rare summer months when the grass gallop becomes too firm we also have a 5-furlong plough gallop.
 
Before horses run we generally look to take them away to work in order to familiarise them with the idea of working away from the yard. For this we use both the beach, a forty minute drive away, and an excellent 6-furlong, uphill sand and fibre gallop which is just a fifteen-minute drive from Capranny.
 
Situated alongside our grass gallop are three consecutive birch schooling hurdles and three consecutive EasyFix schooling fences. For teaching younger horses to jump we also have a sand menage with two EasyFix schooling fences which can be jumped from both directions as well as a lunging ring. Along with the schooling fences we also have a set of starting schools for four horses.
 
After exercise all the horses are washed down for which we have four wash bays and two six horse walkers. In the afternoons all our horses get turned out for at least an hour in one of our five turnout paddocks.
