Ferdy Murphy has been involved with horse racing since he was a teenager when he began working for Phonsie O'Brien in Co Tipperary. After leaving Phonsie's yard, he worked as a labourer on London building sites for eighteen months before being 'recalled' to the racing scene by Paddy Mullins.

Despite earning much more on the building sites than he could working in stables, Ferdy dearly missed being involved with horseracing. When Mr Mullins asked him to break some horses for him, Ferdy grasped his opportunity and quickly rose through the ranks to become stable jockey and held that post for five years.

Ferdy Murphy Racing continues to go from strength to strength, Cheltenham Festival success has come via Paddy's Return (1996 Triumph Hurdle), Stop The Waller (1996 Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Chase) and French Holly (1998 Royal & Sun Alliance Novices Hurdle) and the 1999 Grand National saw Addington Boy finish a fantastic fourth, having only been with Ferdy for a few months.
