('Profile extract from the Alan Smith article, from The Guardian, 22nd March,2000.')

Expectation can be a heavy burden. Ed Dunlop certainly knows that is the case, but five and a half years after Maktoum Al Maktoum installed the then 25-year-old assistant trainer at the helm of Gainsborough Stables in Newmarket after the murder of Alex Scott, he has clearly seen off the doubters.
There are more detractors in Flat racing's international bear pit than people will admit, but nobody can now say the job came solely by virtue of having a famous father in the Arundel trainer John Dunlop.

The yard is situated in Newmarket, the headquarters of British Racing and boasts the best training facilities in the world.
Based on racecourse side of town there is easy access to the gallops and training ground. The horses are kept in American Barn stables, which are airy and fully ventilated. Every horse is bedded down on treated paper, which has been proved to be the most dust free and cleanest bedding available on the market. Their feed is shipped from throughout the world to insure they are given fresh high quality forage. There are 117 stables in the main yard and 14 in our isolation yard, which is very close to the main yard. All new arrivals go through an isolation/quarantine period before entering the main yard.
